About Game Design

Game design describes the rules, decisions, and feedback that shape play. An engine is not required to test every idea. A small paper prototype can expose an unclear rule or an uninteresting decision before substantial programming begins.

Choose a useful starting point

Look for core loops, motivation, and observed playtesting. A design introduction differs from an engine course. Treat a document as a way to explain and revise decisions, rather than proof that a concept will be enjoyable.

Build on the lessons

Create a paper game with one repeated decision and a clear ending. Watch two people play without coaching, then revise the rule that causes the most confusion.
