Course overview

This Wiley course moves from character, camera and control decisions into interfaces, levels and interacting mechanics. Eight modules use readings, brief overviews and assessments to investigate how individual systems fit together. The emphasis is design analysis rather than following a particular game-engine build from start to finish.

What you will learn

  • Relate character, camera and control decisions
  • Analyze interface and level-design choices
  • Evaluate interactions between gameplay systems

Who this suits

The provider lists Intermediate and recommends familiarity with basic game-design concepts, although professional experience is not required. It follows the concept-and-narrative course without repeating that course’s curriculum.

Before you enroll

The page estimates one week at ten study hours. Expect substantial reading from the Level Up! material and assignments rather than ten hours of video. A mechanic that works in isolation may interact poorly with another system, so test combinations. Software implementation and asset creation require additional practice beyond these design lessons.

Coursera offers paid enrollment or subscription access. Check the enrollment screen for assessment and certificate terms, trials and any financial-aid options. Provider access terms can change; review them before paying.

Put it into practice

Diagram a simple encounter with its controls, camera, objectives and feedback. Change one element and predict the effect on the others, then test that prediction in a small prototype.
