Course overview

Successful Negotiation treats the conversation as one stage in a larger process. Preparation comes first: understand the situation, possible outcomes, and what makes an agreement acceptable. The course then considers the negotiation itself and the work needed to turn a tentative understanding into an agreement that can be carried out.

What you will learn

  • Prepare a negotiation analysis
  • Recognize interests and possible tradeoffs
  • Practice negotiation strategies
  • Consider agreement formation and performance

Who this suits

Useful for a beginner negotiating at work, in a small business, or during an everyday purchase. It does not require previous business study. Practicing with another person is valuable because a conversation introduces uncertainty that a written checklist cannot reproduce.

Before you enroll

No tactic guarantees a favorable agreement. Context, relationships, power, and the other party's alternatives all affect the result. The course's discussion of contracts is educational; a real agreement may require advice specific to the jurisdiction and transaction.

Coursera's assessed course and certificate access follow current enrollment terms. Check whether a preview, trial, or financial-aid route is available to you.

Put it into practice

Role-play a fictional supplier negotiation twice, changing the priorities rather than only the price, and compare the agreements each approach makes possible.
