Course overview

Modern Robotics studies how a robot's motion can be described, planned, and controlled mathematically. The sequence moves through the representations and models needed to turn a desired movement into a system that can carry it out. Programming exercises support the theory rather than replacing it with a hardware demonstration.

What you will learn

  • Represent rigid-body motion
  • Analyze robot kinematics
  • Understand dynamics and motion planning
  • Apply introductory control and robotics computation

Who this suits

Best for an engineering or computer-science learner with calculus, linear algebra, and programming experience. It is a demanding starting point for someone whose only robotics exposure is assembling a kit. Refresh matrix operations before beginning so the notation does not obscure the physical meaning.

Before you enroll

Simulation results and mathematical models simplify real mechanisms, sensors, and actuators. The course provides a theoretical foundation, while hardware integration and safety require further practical work. Plan time for deriving relationships and debugging calculations, not only watching lectures.

Coursera's full specialization and certificate access generally require paid enrollment. Check the source for software, textbook, and assessment requirements.

Put it into practice

For a simple manipulator, compare a predicted end-effector position with a simulation and explain the coordinate-frame choices behind both.
