Getting Started With Music Theory provides a structured introduction to the symbols and relationships behind written music. Michigan State moves from tonality and notation to scales, keys and intervals, then rhythm, meter and chords. It suits listeners or players by ear who want to understand how those sounds are represented and organized.
The course is labeled beginner and does not require previous theory study. Expect to practice reading and writing, even if the explanations initially seem familiar.
Knowing a symbol by sight and recognizing its sound are different skills. Add listening or instrument practice so the written exercises connect with music you can hear.

Notate a short rhythm and melody, identify its key and mark the intervals between successive notes. Check the result with an instrument or notation playback.
