California Institute of the Arts — Marc Lowenstein
CalArts connects melodic shape, repetition, consonance and cadences with listening and writing exercises in intermediate music theory.

CalArts approaches theory by asking how technical choices affect what music expresses. Listening, reading and writing examples support modules on melodic lines and modes, repetition and change, consonance and dissonance, and basic harmonic function. It is a useful comparison with courses centered primarily on memorizing notation or chord formulas.
Basic music notation is recommended. The provider lists intermediate level and a substantial workload, including work with musical examples.
The goal is a vocabulary you can use when listening and composing. Avoid reducing an aesthetic judgment to a rule that every piece must follow.

Write a short melodic phrase and three variations. Keep one element constant, change another, and explain which version creates the clearest sense of arrival.
