Berklee’s Jazz Improvisation course studies the decisions behind an improvised solo. Gary Burton treats improvisation as a musical language, then develops vocabulary, scale choices, harmony and theme and variation. This is a practical theory option for someone who already plays an instrument and wants to understand what to listen for while improvising.
The provider lists intermediate level and expects beginner-level instrumental ability plus basic music notation. An instrument is needed to put the concepts into practice.
The teaching can explain a decision, but fluent improvisation depends on repeated listening and playing. Leave space for slow practice before attempting a full-speed solo.
