Course overview

Sathya Peacock connects aperture, shutter speed and film sensitivity with metering and deliberate image-making. Five modules cover film choice, exposure-control methods, focusing and creative techniques. Worksheets and practical activities support the technical explanations, making this a focused exposure course within a larger film-photography series.

What you will learn

  • Relate exposure variables to a film image
  • Use metering methods for different conditions
  • Practice focusing, long exposures and bracketing

Who this suits

Although labeled Beginner, the course expects basic familiarity with a film camera. It is better suited to someone ready to gain control over an existing camera than someone still deciding what film equipment to obtain.

Before you enroll

The five-hour estimate excludes delays for processing a roll. Film, developing, scanning and equipment are separate costs. Keep an exposure record so results can be compared with the decisions that produced them; unlike a digital preview, film may not reveal mistakes until after processing.

Coursera offers paid enrollment or subscription access. Check the enrollment screen for assessment and certificate terms, trials and any financial-aid options. Provider access terms can change; review them before paying.

Put it into practice

Photograph a simple scene with a controlled exposure variation. Record the meter reading and settings, then compare the processed frames to explain the tradeoff rather than selecting a favorite without evidence.
