About Japanese

Japanese learning involves writing systems as well as listening, speaking, grammar, and vocabulary. A course aimed at N5 may already expect kana knowledge. Check that starting point before choosing a route described simply as beginner.

Choose a useful starting point

Inspect teaching language, subtitles, and written materials. Practice with hiragana and katakana before a course that requires them. An N5-oriented curriculum is not an official JLPT result, and exam registration and proficiency assessment are separate.

Build on the lessons

Write and record a short self-introduction using known grammar. Change the details and repeat without reading, then note which sounds or forms need feedback.
