GitHub Actions turns repository events into automated work. A workflow might check a pull request, build an application, prepare an artifact or deploy a release. Understanding events, jobs, steps and runners helps you explain what happens and why. A working green check is useful, but a reliable pipeline also needs meaningful tests, controlled permissions and understandable failures.
Choose introductory workflow study if YAML and job dependencies are new. Developers preparing a first application pipeline can compare the practical projects from Academind, Shaik Mahammad Gouse and Lukasz Kallas. Canberk Akduygu focuses on running test tools in CI, while Dogukan Saner examines trust and security. Microsoft Learn provides a free text-based route. Read the prerequisites and pick examples close enough to your own stack that you can explain the commands being automated.
A hosted runner gives you an execution environment; a self-hosted runner also gives you maintenance and isolation responsibilities. Check operating-system images, dependencies and current usage limits. A cache can improve speed, but the result should remain correct without it. Distinguish temporary runner files from artifacts you intentionally preserve or publish.
Treat outside contributions and workflow inputs according to their trust level. Review token permissions, secret exposure and the versions of third-party actions. Cloud examples can incur account charges, and an automated release can affect a real application. Use an isolated learning repository first, check current GitHub documentation and document how the workflow handles failure.
Create a workflow for a small project in a separate repository. Run a useful check on a pull request, save an artifact and introduce a deliberate failure. Explain which later jobs should stop and which information helps locate the problem. Then inspect the permissions, external actions and credentials involved before adding any deployment step.
