Ethics asks how people ought to act, while moral psychology examines how judgments and behavior arise. The questions inform one another without being identical. Distinguishing them helps prevent an observation from becoming an unsupported moral conclusion.
Choose a course according to whether you want philosophical argument or psychological explanation. Examine evidence and assumptions carefully. A striking experiment or example rarely settles a broad disagreement on its own.
Describe a moral disagreement as a conflict of conclusions, then identify the assumptions or priorities behind it. Explain which question is descriptive and which is normative.
