Course overview
Moralities of Everyday Life asks where moral judgments come from and why people disagree so strongly about them. Its focus is moral psychology: the processes behind judgments and behavior, rather than only a prescription for how people should act. That distinction makes it useful beside a more explicitly philosophical ethics course.
What you will learn
- Understand introductory moral-psychology questions
- Examine the roles of emotion and reasoning
- Discuss empathy and social relationships
- Analyze disagreements without reducing them to labels
Who this suits
Useful for a beginner interested in psychology, ethics, or social life. You do not need a formal background in either discipline. Keep descriptive questions about how people behave separate from normative questions about what they ought to do; the two can inform each other without being identical.
Before you enroll
Examples can challenge strongly held intuitions. The aim is to understand the explanation and evidence, not to treat a single experiment as a final answer to a moral dispute. An introductory course also cannot represent the full range of contemporary research on every topic it raises.

Put it into practice
Describe a moral disagreement twice: first as a conflict of conclusions, then as a difference in assumptions, priorities, or evidence.
