Edinburgh's introduction surveys several areas of philosophy through the questions that make each area distinctive. Rather than presenting philosophy as a list of famous names, it introduces ways of examining knowledge, morality, minds, and reality. The course is useful for learning how to separate an assertion from the argument offered in its support.
Suitable for a curious beginner who is willing to read carefully and reconsider an intuitive position. Previous philosophy study is not necessary. Take notes in your own words and give the strongest version of a view before explaining why you disagree with it.
A survey offers orientation rather than mastery of every debate. Some questions remain open because the disagreement concerns assumptions or standards of explanation. Do not measure progress only by choosing a side; becoming more precise about the question is a substantial part of the work.
