This Sungkyunkwan University course brings philosophical questions into conversation with Korean history, culture and language. Its modules examine innovation at cultural boundaries, central debates and ways of thinking through Korean philosophical ideas. It offers a useful starting point for readers whose previous introductions have focused mainly on European traditions.
No previous philosophy study is required. Interest in Korean culture can provide a starting point, but the course asks you to examine arguments rather than cultural stereotypes.
Cross-cultural comparison is most useful when terms are explained carefully. Avoid treating either Korean or Western philosophy as one uniform position.

Choose a concept discussed in the course and compare two interpretations. Identify the assumptions each interpretation makes and explain what might be lost in translation.
