Course overview
Dog Emotion and Cognition approaches familiar behavior through questions from comparative cognition. The course examines dogs as a subject of scientific study rather than offering a list of training tricks. It is useful for learning to separate what an observation shows from the human intention we might be tempted to assign to it.
What you will learn
- Recognize introductory canine-cognition questions
- Discuss dogs' social behavior
- Distinguish observation from interpretation
- Understand the purpose of simple behavioral comparisons
Who this suits
Suitable for a curious beginner, including a dog owner interested in the research behind everyday interactions. Previous psychology study is not required. Write down what happened before deciding why it happened, and consider whether another explanation could account for the same behavior.
Before you enroll
This is educational material about cognition, not veterinary care or an individualized behavior-treatment plan. A demonstration cannot establish a complete explanation for one animal's behavior. Follow appropriate welfare guidance and seek qualified help when a real health or behavior problem needs assessment.

Put it into practice
Describe a familiar dog behavior using only observable details, then list two different explanations you would need evidence to distinguish.
