PaidDog Emotion and Cognition
A Duke University introduction to the scientific study of dogs, their cognition, social behavior, and relationships with people.
The University of Edinburgh — Hayley Walters
Explore pet ethology, senses, communication and life with humans through the University of Edinburgh’s taught course on cats and dogs.

This course develops a scientific perspective on cats and dogs through ethology, sensory experience and their relationship with humans. Later work considers quality of life and how everyday environments affect pets. Its deeper species focus differs from a general cross-species welfare introduction or a cue-based dog-training course.
Useful for a guardian or animal-care student interested in understanding behaviour and the limits of everyday interpretations, rather than seeking a rapid obedience-training program.
The provider uses a mixed-level filter and lists about 16 hours and 30 minutes of workload. General observations cannot diagnose an individual pet’s health or behaviour. Sudden changes or serious concerns need appropriate veterinary or qualified behavioural support. A course certificate records study rather than clinical competence.
Coursera offers paid enrollment or subscription access. Check the enrollment screen for assessment and certificate terms, trials and any financial-aid options. Provider access terms can change; review them before paying.
Keep a brief, non-intrusive observation record of a familiar pet. Describe what happened before offering an interpretation, and identify which species-specific information could support or challenge that interpretation.
This overview is based on the provider's published information, checked on . It is an editorial assessment, not a claim that we completed the resource. Time filters are approximate study ranges; projects and exercises can take longer.
