Course overview

This introductory Foundations course asks what it means to teach and how to examine classroom quality. Four modules connect professional responsibilities, learning, the classroom environment and continuing development. It gives aspiring and practicing teachers a structured way to reflect on their decisions before moving into more specialized work on planning, assessment or relationships.

What you will learn

  • Examine the professional responsibilities of teaching
  • Reflect on classroom quality and student learning
  • Identify priorities for continued teacher development

Who this suits

The wider program welcomes anyone teaching or interested in teaching at school, home or work. The course level is Mixed, and learners benefit from choosing a specific educational context for their reflections.

Before you enroll

The full workload is a little over ten hours and includes activities beyond watching videos. This is a broad introduction with relevance to classroom practice, rather than a complete behavior-management system. Education requirements differ by country and role, so a course certificate must not be confused with teacher registration. Completing this introductory course is also separate from completing all courses in the Foundations program.

Coursera offers paid enrollment or subscription access. Check the enrollment screen for assessment and certificate terms, trials and any financial-aid options. Provider access terms can change; review them before paying.

Put it into practice

Describe a fictional classroom and identify one strength and one area for improvement. Explain which evidence supports each judgment, then write a realistic professional-learning goal that addresses the improvement without assuming a cause you have not checked.
