Course overview

Part 2 of Uncommon Sense Teaching connects classroom community with habits that support learning. Its four modules examine motivation and stress, procedural and declarative learning, intellectual humility and neurodiversity. Discussions of rewards and routine help teachers consider how everyday classroom practices can support participation while avoiding fashionable explanations that lack adequate evidence.

What you will learn

  • Relate motivation and habits to classroom routines
  • Compare procedural and declarative learning approaches
  • Reflect on bias, humility and learner differences

Who this suits

This Intermediate course explicitly recommends completing Course 1 of the Uncommon Sense Teaching specialization first. Teachers across subjects and educational settings can apply the examples, but it should not be presented as a prerequisite-free starting point.

Before you enroll

The published workload is about 14 hours and includes more than the lesson videos. Neurodiversity content is educational context, not diagnostic training. Classroom routines should be adapted to learners and checked against actual participation, rather than assumed effective because they are described with neuroscience terminology. Enrollment in this part is a distinct course choice; review specialization access and completion requirements separately if you want the broader program.

Coursera offers paid enrollment or subscription access. Check the enrollment screen for assessment and certificate terms, trials and any financial-aid options. Provider access terms can change; review them before paying.

Put it into practice

Select a routine such as starting independent work. Describe the current cues and steps, propose one change informed by the course, and plan how to observe participation over several lessons while inviting feedback from students.
