Course overview

Based on Nathan Burns’s book, this Sage course considers how secondary teachers can make thinking and learning processes more explicit. Eleven modules connect metacognitive theory and common misconceptions with modeling, questions, discussion and independent work. Its relevance to classroom management is through purposeful participation and learners’ ability to monitor their own approach.

What you will learn

  • Distinguish knowledge and regulation of cognition
  • Plan questions and modeling that reveal thinking
  • Support reflection during discussion and independent work

Who this suits

Secondary-school teachers are the intended audience. The course is Intermediate and recommends a basic understanding of teaching methods, making it more useful after some classroom experience than as an introduction to the profession.

Before you enroll

The approximately nine-hour workload is largely reading and assessment based, with short overview videos. Check this format against your preferred way of studying. Metacognition is not a substitute for subject knowledge, accessible instruction or clear classroom routines. Use the strategies selectively and evaluate how learners respond. The completion certificate is professional-development evidence, not a separate license or authorization to teach.

Coursera offers paid enrollment or subscription access. Check the enrollment screen for assessment and certificate terms, trials and any financial-aid options. Provider access terms can change; review them before paying.

Put it into practice

Take a sample problem from your subject and script a short think-aloud demonstration. Add a question that asks learners to explain their choice of strategy and a closing reflection that helps them decide what to change next time.
