Course overview

Stephen Webber concentrates on the artistic decisions behind a recording. Listening exercises lead into identity, intention, arrangement and the sonic character of a song. Learners record and review music, but the course does not teach the controls of a particular digital audio workstation; its main subject is why a production choice serves the music.

What you will learn

  • Listen critically to musical and sonic choices
  • Define an artistic intention for a recording
  • Develop a song’s arrangement and sonic character

Who this suits

The header lists Intermediate, while the published requirements say prior knowledge is unnecessary. You do not need to read music or play an instrument, but you must be able to record, upload work and participate in peer review.

Before you enroll

The full workload is about eleven hours. A phone or laptop can support assignments, so expensive studio equipment is not a stated requirement. This is distinct from Berklee’s technical production course and is not a DAW tutorial. Use recordings you may share, consider feedback critically, and distinguish a course completion certificate from a degree or professional endorsement. Expect to improve decisions through repeated listening rather than a guaranteed sound quality.

Coursera offers paid enrollment or subscription access. Check the enrollment screen for assessment and certificate terms, trials and any financial-aid options. Provider access terms can change; review them before paying.

Put it into practice

Record a short original musical idea and write its intended mood. Make a second version changing one arrangement or sonic choice, then ask a listener whether the difference supports your intention and explain what you would revise next.
