Course overview

Tim Miller connects technique with the listening and preparation needed for guitar performance. Warm-ups, ear development and touch lead toward a more deliberate performance process. It suits guitarists who have built introductory chord and scale skills and want to examine how timing, tone and preparation help an individual part fit with other musicians rather than focus only on playing more notes.

What you will learn

  • Develop warm-ups and practical listening skills.
  • Explore touch, tone and chordal accompaniment.
  • Prepare for ensemble playing and performance.

Who this suits

Intermediate learners who have completed Guitar for Beginners and Guitar Scales and Chord Progressions or equivalent work. The workload includes readings, assessments and practice activities rather than the same number of video hours. Practice and recording are central to applying the material.

Before you enroll

Plan regular playing practice alongside the lessons, using a tuned instrument and a tempo that lets every note sound clearly. Increase difficulty gradually and take breaks when your hands need them. A long video total is not a prediction of how quickly you will play well. Check whether the demonstrations require an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar or an amplifier, and use recordings to compare timing and tone over time.

Coursera offers paid enrollment or subscription access. Check the enrollment screen for assessment and certificate terms, trials and any financial-aid options. Provider access terms can change; review them before paying.

Put it into practice

Prepare a short original accompaniment for a backing track you may use. Record two takes, compare timing and tone and write a specific practice plan for the weaker passage before recording again.
