Course overview

This Skillshare course places songwriting inside the DAW. Its seven modules connect harmonic movement with riffs, instrument choices, vocal material and recording decisions, ending in a project. The emphasis is on developing a musical idea and supporting it with layers rather than learning every Live control.

What you will learn

  • Develop harmony and melodic movement
  • Combine recorded and virtual instruments
  • Layer and process a song arrangement

Who this suits

Best suited to someone who can already navigate Ableton and understands basic chords and scales, even though the provider places it in the beginner filter.

Before you enroll

The published requirements assume basic Ableton and music knowledge. Plan separate practice time and access to the software; subscription enrollment does not include a DAW license. Genre examples are starting points for exploration, not a promise that one set of techniques fits every style equally well.

Coursera offers paid enrollment or subscription access. Check the enrollment screen for assessment and certificate terms, trials and any financial-aid options. Provider access terms can change; review them before paying.

Put it into practice

Write an eight-bar idea, arrange it with two different instrument combinations, and record the reason for each change. Use your own recordings or appropriately licensed samples.
