Course overview

This course follows a fermentation process toward pilot scale and then downstream processing. Four modules introduce the process, examine it more closely and consider preparing and purifying a product. The structure helps learners understand the links between biological production and later handling, rather than viewing fermentation as a single isolated vessel operation.

What you will learn

  • Map a pilot-scale fermentation workflow
  • Identify downstream preparation stages
  • Discuss process and purification constraints

Who this suits

Useful for a beginner examining industrial fermentation, including food-related applications, who wants process context rather than operating instructions for a particular bioreactor.

Before you enroll

The provider lists six hours of work and beginner level. This is a general bioprocessing course, with relevance beyond food production. Laboratory and plant access are not included. Completion does not authorize operating equipment or substitute for facility training, validated procedures or product-specific food-safety review.

Coursera offers paid enrollment or subscription access. Check the enrollment screen for assessment and certificate terms, trials and any financial-aid options. Provider access terms can change; review them before paying.

Put it into practice

Draw a conceptual process from feedstock through fermentation to downstream handling. Label where information is missing and explain why a successful laboratory result alone is insufficient to define a production procedure.
