Course overview

Cambridge approaches memory through teaching rather than competitive memorization. Six modules connect how information is stored and reconstructed with development across childhood and adulthood. The later lessons examine neurodiversity and evidence for classroom methods, giving teachers a way to question whether a promising laboratory finding transfers to their own pupils.

What you will learn

  • Distinguish memory systems and reconstructive recall
  • Relate developmental changes to learning activities
  • Evaluate evidence behind classroom memory strategies

Who this suits

Teachers across subjects and educational stages are the main audience. Interested general learners can also enroll without specialist neuroscience knowledge, particularly if they want the science behind learning rather than a collection of mnemonic tricks.

Before you enroll

The approximately 22-hour workload includes readings and substantial assignments, not that many hours of video. Examples concerning autism, dyslexia and ADHD introduce educational support; they do not train learners to diagnose conditions. A completion certificate is separate from a teaching qualification. Treat research summaries as a starting point for examining evidence and avoid assuming one technique works equally well for every learner or every curriculum.

Coursera offers paid enrollment or subscription access. Check the enrollment screen for assessment and certificate terms, trials and any financial-aid options. Provider access terms can change; review them before paying.

Put it into practice

Choose a short lesson you teach or study. Plan two recall activities, explain the memory processes each is intended to support, and note how you would check understanding after a delay without interpreting one result as proof of effectiveness.
