Course overview

IBM develops RAG beyond an initial pipeline through vector indexing and more advanced retrieval patterns. FAISS and Chroma examples connect with LangChain, LlamaIndex and an application interface. It suits learners who already know Python and similarity search and want to investigate retrieval behavior before selecting an optimization for a specific failure.

What you will learn

  • Explore vector databases and indexing approaches.
  • Compare advanced retrieval patterns.
  • Integrate retrievers with a RAG application.

Who this suits

Python, vector-database familiarity and working knowledge of RAG and similarity search are recommended.

Before you enroll

Model APIs, vector databases and hosting may cost extra. Verify package versions before reproducing demonstrations. Use fictional or permissioned documents and test access controls. Evaluate retrieval quality separately from answer quality, include questions the documents cannot answer and check citations. A working demonstration does not establish factual accuracy, resistance to malicious documents or production reliability.

Coursera offers paid enrollment or subscription access. Check the enrollment screen for assessment and certificate terms, trials and any financial-aid options. Provider access terms can change; review them before paying.

Put it into practice

Create a small retrieval evaluation set and compare two retrieval configurations, inspecting the passages that improve or worsen before judging answer fluency.
