Course overview

First Step Korean begins with the writing system and develops basic language through familiar themes. Learning to recognize and produce the alphabet gives the later vocabulary a firmer foundation than relying indefinitely on romanized spellings. The course connects introductory reading, listening, speaking, and writing rather than treating each as a separate destination.

What you will learn

  • Recognize and practice the Korean alphabet
  • Use basic greetings and introductions
  • Understand introductory everyday vocabulary
  • Produce simple Korean sentences

Who this suits

Suitable for a complete beginner learning through English. Leave time to practice letter combinations and read them aloud. A small amount of deliberate daily recall is more useful than watching several lessons without checking whether you can recognize the same words independently.

Before you enroll

This is a first course, so its everyday exchanges should not be mistaken for broad conversational proficiency. Pronunciation, politeness, and natural usage benefit from further guided practice. Avoid depending on romanization after you can begin reading the alphabet directly.

Full Coursera assessments and certificate access follow the current enrollment plan. Preview and financial-aid options should be checked on the provider page.

Put it into practice

Write and say a short introduction using the alphabet, then change the name or family information without returning to the example.
