Course overview

Financial Accounting teaches you to read the three statements that describe a business from different angles: its income statement, balance sheet, and cash-flow statement. The useful shift is from recognizing a number to asking how it was produced. Accounting standards and reporting incentives become part of interpreting the result.

What you will learn

  • Read an income statement and balance sheet
  • Understand a statement of cash flows
  • Connect transactions to financial reporting
  • Recognize how accounting choices affect interpretation

Who this suits

A useful foundation for a founder, manager, analyst, or student who has encountered financial reports without formal accounting study. No accounting qualification is assumed. Work carefully through the relationships between statements instead of memorizing individual definitions as disconnected vocabulary.

Before you enroll

Introductory financial reporting is different from maintaining a compliant set of books or preparing jurisdiction-specific tax filings. Use the course to improve understanding, then study the standards and professional requirements that apply to your actual role. Real reports also deserve their notes and disclosures read alongside the totals.

Coursera's full course and certificate experience is subject to its current paid enrollment terms; preview or financial-aid options can vary.

Put it into practice

Trace one fictional sale through all three financial statements and explain why recognized profit and cash received need not be equal.
