Course overview

Contours develops the use of line to explain three-dimensional form. The course distinguishes outside contours, internal overlaps and cross-contour lines, then connects them with volume and foreshortening. It is a focused later stage in Eviston’s sequence, with different objectives from introductory mark-making or gesture drawing.

What you will learn

  • Distinguish different contour-line roles
  • Describe overlaps and volume with line
  • Explore foreshortening in observed forms

Who this suits

Useful for a learner with drawing experience who can establish basic shapes but wants lines to communicate more about how a subject turns through space.

Before you enroll

The provider recommends some drawing experience and points beginners toward Basic Skills first. About one hour and 17 minutes of video are listed, with a September 2017 update. The course is the sixth separately enrolled installment, not the full series. Leave time to practise each line system from observation.

Udemy offers paid purchase or subscription access depending on the current course and region. Paid teaching courses provide completion certificates under Udemy’s policy. Check current access terms and any separate software or material costs before enrolling.

Put it into practice

Draw a folded cloth or rounded object three times, emphasizing a different contour type each time. Combine the approaches in a final study and explain where each line helps describe depth.
