Paul Kyle examines how editing gives a film its structure and rhythm. Five modules connect foundational approaches with pacing, narrative flow, montage and alternatives to continuity. Creative prompts ask learners to produce and compare short sequences, making the course about editorial thinking rather than a software-command tutorial.
Although labeled Beginner, assignments require working knowledge of editing software and access to it. A video camera is recommended, but a smartphone can provide footage for the exercises.
The page suggests two weeks at ten study hours. Filming, revision and peer review may take longer. Software access is separate, and the concepts need practice with your own material. Evaluate both clarity and intended emotional effect instead of assuming a faster cutting rate automatically creates a stronger sequence.
Coursera offers paid enrollment or subscription access. Check the enrollment screen for assessment and certificate terms, trials and any financial-aid options. Provider access terms can change; review them before paying.
Edit the same original footage into a continuous version and a montage. Show both to another person and record how their understanding of time, action or mood differs.
