University of Pennsylvania — Robert Ghrist
Review Penn’s differentiation course for derivatives, their applications, differentials and operators within its single-variable calculus sequence.
Opens on the provider’s site. Check current access and certificate terms there.
Penn takes a fresh look at differentiation before putting derivatives to work and introducing differentials and operators. The sequence follows the functions-focused first part of its calculus collection. Its value is the connection between derivative notation and what a derivative describes, rather than treating differentiation as a list of rules to memorize.
Coursera labels the course mixed level. Preview earlier function and limit material to assess your preparation for the differentiation sequence.
Work through the algebra as well as the numerical answer. Sketch the function or region involved and check which assumptions allow the chosen calculus method to apply.
Coursera offers paid enrollment or subscription access. Check the enrollment screen for assessment and certificate terms, trials and any financial-aid options. Provider access terms can change; review them before paying.
Choose a simple changing quantity and graph its value and derivative. Explain what a positive, negative or zero derivative means in that example.
